Hello IOTA Community Knowledgebase

What is a seed?

HI Admin

Think about a seed as the combined username and password that grants access to your bank account. If anyone obtains your seed, they can login and access your funds.

Seed: You must generate a random 81-character seed using only A-Z and the number 9. It is imperative that your seed be an 81-character random assortment of A-Z and 9.

The following methods are not safe for generating seeds:

Bashing on the keyboard randomly (not as random as you’d think)
Making the seed by hand (humans aren’t very random)
Using online seed generators that are not on this list (your funds will get stolen)
Using any commands in Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt (not very random at all, your seed will be brute forced easily)

NOTE: These are seed generators that have been verified by the community as safe. Use of any "untrusted seed generator" (or any seed generator for that matter) is at your own risk. Additionally, it is safer to generate the seed offline rather than using an online seed generator.

Depending on your Operating System, you can use the following command-line tools to generate a seed:

  • Linux

    cat /dev/urandom |tr -dc A-Z9|head -c${1:-81}

  • Mac

    cat /dev/urandom |LC_ALL=C tr -dc 'A-Z9' | fold -w 81 | head -n 1

Do not use an online seed generator.
